Suzanne McLeod is an Assistant Professor at the School of Art, University of Manitoba. She completed her PhD in Art History with a focus on the Art Americas and Native American studies. Her dissertation examined the cultural parallels between Spanish colonial explorers and Indigenous nations of the Pacific Northwest, challenging narratives of colonization. Suzanne has received several accolades including the Thomas J. Popejoy Dissertation Award for her academic excellence in the humanities and is currently working on publishing a book chapter based on her research. At the University of Manitoba, she has developed multiple new courses centered on Indigenous scholarship in art history, encompassing ancient Woodland art to contemporary Indigenous artists. Her research interests also include Indigenous feminisms, contemporary Indigenous art, and the development of imagery of Indigenous people during the Renaissance in Italy. In 2023, she received a SSHRC Insight Development Grant to explore the historical impacts of the papal bull, Inter Caetera, on Indigenous peoples over the last 500 years.
