Biography

Suzanne Tyas is an Associate Professor at the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on identifying strategies that help preserve memory and cognitive abilities in older adults, thereby increasing their quality of life. She investigates the factors that put individuals at risk for cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and explores the elements that contribute to cognitive resilience. Her studies span the life course, from genetic predispositions at birth to environmental factors in late life, such as experiences with stroke. With the world's aging population, age-related diseases including Alzheimer's have become increasingly prevalent. Although a cure for Alzheimer's is not currently available, Dr. Tyas emphasizes the importance of preventive measures to enhance cognitive resilience. Additionally, she supervises graduate students and is actively accepting applications for new recruits. Her teaching interests include epidemiologic methods and the epidemiology of aging.
