Biography

Sven Askes is an Assistant Professor in the Photo Conversion Materials section at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He leads a research group focused on the intersection of nanophotonics, materials science, and heterogeneous catalysis. His work aims to develop advanced materials and technologies to facilitate energy-efficient and programmable catalysis, with implications for green chemistry and clean energy production. He has received an ERC Starting Grant to transform chemical reactors, moving away from traditional fossil-fuel-based methods to pulsed photothermal catalysis, involving engineered plasmonic nanostructures that can efficiently convert light into heat at the catalytic surface. Sven’s contributions include projects in polymer recycling and the dynamism of energy flow at the nanoscale. He has published widely, with work appearing in leading journals, and he is an active mentor and organizer of scientific events. Sven earned his PhD in Chemistry at Leiden University and has pursued postdoctoral research in Germany and at AMOLF Amsterdam, focusing on nanotechnologies and novel synthesis methods.
