Sven Zebel is a social and forensic psychologist who has been an endowed professor in mediation at the Department of Private Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since 2021. He also serves as an associate professor at the Department of Psychology of Conflict, Risk, and Safety at University of Twente. Zebel's research focuses on the psychological responses of citizens to conflicts and the experiences of victims and perpetrators of crimes. He examines the impact of both legal and non-legal interventions aimed at restoration, conflict resolution, and reducing recidivism, including mediation and restorative justice practices. During his doctoral and postdoctoral studies at the University of Amsterdam from 2000 to 2009, he investigated and published work on the psychological mechanisms and emotions experienced by victims, such as fear, anger, and contempt, as well as feelings of guilt, shame, anger, and compassion in offenders. From 2008 to 2011, he worked as a policy researcher for Victim Image and Victim Support Netherlands and as a researcher for the recidivism monitor for the WODC before joining University of Twente in 2011.
