Biography

Svitlana Matviyenko is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, with a focus on critical media analysis. Her research interests intersect informed science technology studies, history of science, disinformation, cyberwar, popular mobilization, and critical infrastructure studies. Matviyenko’s work addresses nuclear cultures, nuclear colonialism, technogenic catastrophes, and the practices of nuclear terror in the context of the Russian war in Ukraine. She explores the political economy of cultural logics in cyberwarfare and the environmental impacts of warfare. Matviyenko is a co-editor of 'Imaginary App' (MIT Press, 2014) and 'Lacan Posthuman' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018), and the co-author of 'Cyberwar Revolution: Digital Subterfuge Global Capitalism' (University of Minnesota Press, 2019), which has been awarded the Science, Technology, Art International Relations (STAIR) book award in 2019. Her educational background includes a PhD in Critical Theory from the University of Western Ontario and in Film and Media Theory from the University of Missouri. She teaches various communication courses focusing on technology and society, highlighting contemporary conversations on cyberwar and digital cultures.
