Swethaa S. Ballakrishnen is a socio-legal scholar whose research examines the intersections of law, globalization, and stratification from a critical feminist global South perspective. Their work interrogates how law and legal institutions create and perpetuate socio-economic inequalities across various sites and levels of analysis. In addition to their scholarly output, Professor Ballakrishnen’s research has been featured in various professional and popular media outlets including the Harvard Business Review, Stanford News Report, and Bloomberg Law. Professor Ballakrishnen is dedicated to building and serving socio-legal communities, particularly those that focus on critical questions in legal education and the profession. At UC Irvine, they co-run the Center for Empirical Research on the Legal Profession and the Socio-Legal Studies Workshop, emphasizing law, society, and culture. They have also held the position of Visiting Scholar in Legal Education at the AccessLex American Bar Foundation, and in 2020 were honored as the AALS Teacher of the Year.
