Biography

Sybe de Vries is a Full Professor of Public Economic Law at Utrecht University, specializing in EU Single Market Law and fundamental rights. He was awarded the Jean Monnet Chair in 2012 and serves as a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges and University of Trento in Italy for the academic year 2023-2024. He also holds the Marcel Storme Chair at Ghent University, Belgium. His research focuses on the EU Single Market law, examining the twin green and digital transition, the impact of digitalization on ecological requirements, and public economic law. Sybe is co-director of the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (Renforce) and has previously served as the Academic Director of the Utrecht Centre of Global Challenges, an interdisciplinary platform for research and education on contested global orders. He coordinated the FP7 research project 'bEUcitizenship', which explored European citizenship. Additionally, he is an honorary judge at the District Court in Rotterdam and the president of the Netherlands Association of European Law (NVER), as well as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of European Economic Law (SEW).
