Biography

Sybil Seitzinger is an interdisciplinary Earth system scientist and organizational leader. She is a Professor Emerita at the University of Victoria’s School of Environmental Studies and served as the Executive Director of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions from 2015 to 2022. Her work focuses on developing and implementing transdisciplinary research approaches that engage government and private sector partners to co-design impactful climate solutions. Previously, she was the Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program in Stockholm, Sweden, where she fostered global collaborations on climate change research from 2008 to 2015. She has also directed the Rutgers/NOAA Cooperative Marine Education Research Program and worked as a visiting professor at the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences at Rutgers University. Seitzinger holds a PhD in biological oceanography from the University of Rhode Island and an honorary doctorate from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Geophysical Union. Her research is highly cited, with over 130 peer-reviewed publications, and is centered on nutrient biogeochemistry in coastal, marine, and freshwater ecosystems.
