Dr. Syed Imtiaz

Biography

Syed Imtiaz has a comprehensive academic and professional background in chemical and environmental engineering. He earned a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and a PhD from the University of Alberta. He joined the Faculty of Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland in March 2010 as a professor in the Process Engineering discipline after previously working as a consultant in the Advanced Process Control group at Aspen Technology. In his role, he implemented advanced control solutions across a wide range of industries, including refineries and petrochemical plants. His research primarily focuses on process monitoring, control, and simulation, using multivariate statistical tools and Bayesian belief networks for complex reasoning and online diagnosis of process faults. He has contributed to more than thirty peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, with research goals that emphasize maximizing yields while maintaining safe operations in processing industries. His work is particularly relevant to key areas in the province such as offshore oil and gas and mineral processing.
