Biography

Sylvain Quessy is a veterinarian graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal (1984). He worked successively as a practitioner and as a veterinary hygienist for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency until obtaining his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology in 1994. He then held the position of researcher and head of the environmental hygiene section of the Veterinary and Food Hygiene Laboratory. From 1999 to 2005, he served as a professor in veterinary hygiene and held a research chair in food safety. Between 2006 and 2013, he was director of the Department of Pathology and Microbiology and associate dean for research and graduate studies at the Faculty. Since 2013, he has also been Chief Scientist responsible for developing the new risk assessment model for food establishments in Canada. He has supervised numerous graduate students focusing on foodborne pathogens and is an author or co-author of 50 scientific articles concerning zoonotic microorganisms.
