Dr. Sylvia Ang is a Lecturer in Sociology whose research focuses on the experiences of migrants in Asia, exploring issues of inequality related to ethnic relations, class, and gender, as well as the mobilities and decolonisation processes. Her scholarship has significantly contributed to both international and national discussions regarding how ethnicity, class, gender, and nationality shape the lives of Asian migrants. Utilizing in-depth interviews, ethnography, and digital ethnography, she has published in high-quality refereed journals, including the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies and Ethnic and Racial Studies. Her recent monograph, 'Contesting Chineseness: Nationality, Class, and Gender of New Chinese Migrants,' awarded the Raewyn Connell Prize in 2024, examines critical perspectives in migration studies, ethnic and racial studies, diasporas, and postcolonialism. Previously, Ang held postdoctoral positions at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation and the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore. She guides research projects that interrogate the role of class in shaping migrants' lives and addresses the need to decenter Western perspectives in migration studies. Dr. Ang is actively supervising PhD students on various topics such as asylum seekers, international student employability, and gender migration issues.
