Dr. Sylvia Bergh

Biography

Sylvia Bergh is an Associate Professor in Development Management and Governance at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Erasmus University Rotterdam. Currently, she holds a dual role as a senior researcher at the Centre of Expertise on Global Governance at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Her research focuses on pressing societal issues like multi-stakeholder and multi-level governance, particularly in the context of heatwave adaptation, which has become increasingly critical due to its severe impacts on vulnerable populations. With over 20 years of experience, she has developed a strong expertise in local governance, decentralisation, natural resource management, and public sector reform, particularly in the Global South, with a specific interest in the Middle East and North Africa. Her work emphasizes the importance of citizen-state relations, exploring how local actors engage with global policy frameworks. Sylvia is committed to interdisciplinary research and actively seeks to influence policy through extensive engagement with stakeholders. She is also interested in supervising PhD candidates and fostering international research collaborations with a focus on improving people's lives through effective governance solutions.
