Biography

Dr. Sylvia Evans' research focuses on defining the genetic pathways underlying heart development to enhance the understanding of congenital adult heart disease. A fundamental aspect of her work is the investigation of how the heart develops and the implications this holds for congenital heart disease, which may inform potential cell-based therapies for repairing diseased hearts. Her laboratory aims to elucidate the stepwise process by which mesodermal precursors become committed cardiac progenitors, and how these progenitors then differentiate into distinct cardiac lineages. Dr. Evans’ lab has developed several Cre-expressing mouse models to explore the gene pathways necessary for the specification of various cardiac lineages, including the proepicardial organ, vasculature cells, and cardiac fibroblasts. With notable academic achievements throughout her career, she has earned degrees from prestigious institutions, including a B.S. in Genetics from the University of Alberta and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of British Columbia, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuromolecular Biology at the Salk Institute.
