Dr. Sylvia Gustin

Biography

Dr. Sylvia Gustin is a leading researcher at the University of New South Wales, serving as the Director of the NeuroRecovery Research Hub and the Founding Director of the Centre for Pain IMPACT. She specializes in using multimodal neuroimaging techniques, such as functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging, to investigate central circuits underlying chronic pain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Her research program focuses on translational pipelines that bridge basic science and clinical applications, aiming to develop novel therapeutic interventions that improve the lives of individuals affected by complex pain disorders. Dr. Gustin is also a registered psychologist and has extensive training in clinical psychology, particularly in managing chronic pain and mental health disorders. Her innovative work includes developing new technologies and treatment methods, such as Virtual Reality Walking and gamified Brain-Computer Interfaces, to alleviate neuropathic pain and restore sensory perception in patients with severe sensorimotor deficits. She has received research funding from prestigious organizations, including the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council and the Military Medical Research Fund, supporting her significant contributions to the field of pain research.
