Biography

As a Canada Research Chair in Clinical Nutrition, Dr. Santosa conducts cutting-edge research to identify the long-term effects of obesity on cellular mechanisms throughout the body. Obesity concerns millions of Canadians at both the individual and societal level, yet the existing public policy and individual weight interventions are not fully adequate. The metabolic cellular mechanisms through which overweight individuals develop diseases are not completely understood. Furthermore, the effects of obesity on the progression and treatment of diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes are not fully explored. Dr. Santosa applies techniques from biology, physiology, and nutrition to investigate the underlying effects of obesity that contribute to weight gain and disease. Results from her studies aim to promote the development of public health interventions for disease prevention and management. Her research has been funded by prestigious organizations such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research, and NSERC. Current projects include examining regional differences in fat tissue among bariatric surgery patients and investigating early versus late onset obesity, among others.
