Sylvia Sleep is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering at the University of Calgary. She received her PhD in Civil and Mineral Engineering from the University of Toronto in 2018, where her research focused on utilizing life cycle assessment to evaluate the greenhouse gas mitigation potential of emerging oil sands technologies. Prior to her current faculty position, she completed the Eyes High Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary, concentrating on systems-level assessments of carbon capture utilization technologies. Sylvia's expertise lies in the development and integration of assessment tools, including life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic assessment (TEA), along with energy system modeling to evaluate new technologies that could significantly contribute to decarbonization. Presently, her research interests encompass the development of the Canadian Open Energy (CANOE) model using the TEMOA framework, improving early-stage technology assessments, and integrating LCA, TEA, and geospatial modeling to assess the benefits and trade-offs of low-carbon hydrogen technologies, carbon capture, utilization and storage, and carbon dioxide removal strategies. She has been actively involved in the ACCT Network, focusing on carbon capture utilization technologies.
