Dr. Sylvia Yanagisako

Biography

Sylvia Yanagisako is the Centennial Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics. She joined LSE in 2023, after a distinguished career at Stanford University where she served as the Edward Clark Crossett Professor of Humanistic Studies and Professor of Anthropology. Her research examines themes of kinship, gender, and capitalism, with a particular focus on how these intersect in various cultural contexts. One of her notable publications is 'Fabricating Transnational Capitalism', co-authored with Lisa Rofel, which explores collaborative ethnography within Italian-Chinese joint ventures in the global fashion industry. Her other works include 'Producing Culture Capital: Family Firms in Italy' and 'Naturalizing Power: Essays on Feminist Cultural Analysis'. Yanagisako's expertise spans the fields of anthropology, particularly in relation to Italy and the United States, with significant contributions to understanding gender and kinship dynamics in modern capitalist societies.
