Biography

Professor Sylvie Lesage obtained her BSc in interdisciplinary immunology from McGill University. She completed her PhD in experimental medicine under the supervision of Professor Patrice Hugo, studying central tolerance mechanisms of T lymphocytes. Following her doctoral studies, she undertook a postdoctoral fellowship with Professor Christopher C. Goodnow in Australia, recognized internationally for his work in immunogenetics. During this fellowship, Dr. Lesage utilized murine models to study genetic predisposition to autoimmune diseases, such as Type 1 diabetes. Her research demonstrated a significant role of central tolerance in autoimmune predisposition, previously emphasizing peripheral tolerance. Dr. Lesage established her laboratory at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in 2005, focusing on the biology and genetics of immune cell populations that induce immune tolerance to prevent autoimmune diseases. From 2021 to 2025, she served as the scientific director of the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Research Center.
