Biography

Sylvie Levine is a Lecturer at Columbia Law School and currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Federal Defenders of New York. She has been a trial attorney for the Southern District since 2015, representing clients in various aspects of federal cases, including presentment and sentencing. In 2023, Sylvie was part of the legal team that represented a client during the culpability and penalty phases of a federal capital trial. Before joining the Federal Defenders, she worked at the Bronx Defenders, where she represented clients facing misdemeanor and felony charges in the Bronx Criminal Supreme Courts. In addition to her duties as a staff attorney, she supervised new criminal defense attorneys and served as a team leader for an interdisciplinary team of advocates. Sylvie has also taught trial advocacy at the National Criminal Defense College (NCDC) and the Defenders' Academy, and she has been involved with St. John's School of Law. Sylvie attended Columbia University and the UCLA School of Law, where she participated in the David J. Epstein Public Interest Law and Policy Program and served as President of the Moot Court Executive Board.
