Dr. Sylvie Lomer

Biography

Sylvie Lomer is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, specializing in Education with a focus on international students' policy, practice, and discourse. Her expertise lies in critical approaches to public policy discourses surrounding the representation of international students. She teaches the MA in International Education and the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, with a specialization in the policy aspects of global higher education. Sylvie co-founded the 'Research with International Students' network, which aims to support colleagues at various career stages in developing impactful research on international students. She is also a founding co-editor of the Journal of Global Higher Education. Sylvie has a significant interest in decolonial frameworks and engages with critical questions relevant to global higher education contexts. Her professional contributions include participating in organizing conferences and workshops, delivering invited talks, and leading research activities focused on internationalization in higher education. Sylvie obtained her Doctorate in Education from the University of Sheffield in 2013, which explored the rationales for recruiting international students within UK policy frameworks. Her research aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in relation to education.
