Sylvie Tran is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Michigan State University College of Music. As a music theorist, she explores the intersections of music, place, and identity, with a particular focus on American classical music. Her current research investigates the portrayals of the American West in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art music through lenses of race, gender, and landscape. In addition, her secondary research, drawing on her experience as a flutist, delves into performance analysis, specifically the intersubjective aspects of chamber music performance and the politics of reorchestration, arrangements, and transcriptions. Tran holds a Ph.D. in music theory from the University of Michigan and a B.M. in flute performance from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has previously taught courses in music theory, aural skills, and keyboard harmony at the Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Michigan.
