Dr. Szilvia Szanyi

Biography

Szilvia Szanyi is a Gordon Milburn Junior Research Fellow at the Faculty of Theology and Religion and Campion Hall, University of Oxford. She completed her DPhil in 2022 at the Faculty of Theology and Religion and St John’s College, Oxford. Szanyi teaches lectures, tutorials, and classes on a range of topics including Buddhism, mysticism, and religious studies, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. Her research primarily focuses on Buddhist philosophy, with particular emphasis on the Abhidharma and Yogācāra traditions. As part of her current fellowship, she explores the theme of Buddhist 'mysticism', examining the dimensions of non-discursive experience that accompany enlightenment in the Yogācāra school. She has a strong interest in Buddhist commentarial literature, specifically looking at how commentators have shaped the identity of their respective traditions, as well as comparative studies of doctrinal developments in Buddhist philosophical traditions in ancient India.
