Biography

T'ai Smith is an art and design historian with a focus on textile and fashion theory, exploring the intersections of politics, technology, gender, labor, and economy. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses concentrated on modern and contemporary European and American art and design, art historical methodology, visual studies, German critical theory, and media theory. Smith is the author of 'Bauhaus Weaving Theory: Feminine Craft Mode Design' (University of Minnesota Press, 2014) and has contributed to several volumes, including 'Anni Albers: Weaving, New Expanded Edition' (Princeton University Press, 2017) and the 'Textile Reader, 2nd edition' (Bloomsbury, 2023). Her articles have appeared in journals such as ARCH+ Journal, Art Journal, and Leonardo. Smith has published works with esteemed institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate Modern in London. She received the American Craft Council Emerging Scholar Award and has participated in research collaborations, such as the SSHRC Insight Grant. Currently, she is involved in several book manuscripts and collaborates on projects in the Slow Fashion Research Excellence Cluster at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
