Biography

T. Conrad Gilliam is the Marjorie Bernard Mitchell Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, where he leads research in the Department of Human Genetics. His research centers on the identification and characterization of heritable mutations impacting the nervous system. His projects include genetic mapping of rare (Mendelian) disease mutations, the downstream consequences of these mutations, and the study of common heritable disorders using mouse models and genomic bioinformatics approaches. He collaborates with specialists in data-mining, network topology, systems biology, large-scale computing, and statistical genetics to develop innovative methods for mapping multi-gene determinants of common neuropsychiatric disorders. His interdisciplinary approach reduces the complexity of gene-gene combinations documented in literature and whole genome databases, aiming to avoid penalties associated with multiple testing. Gilliam remains active in building software solutions for large-scale data mining and integration.
