Dr. T E Swierstra

Biography

T.E. Swierstra is a Professor of Philosophy at Maastricht University, noted for his work in the field of ethics, particularly as it pertains to emerging science and technology. He published extensively on moral controversies surrounding cloning, reproductive technologies, genomics, food technologies, and artificial gametes, among others. His research delves into the mutual shaping of science and technology, termed 'TechnoMoral Change', and aims to provide anticipatory knowledge to technologists, policymakers, and the public. Swierstra has been associated with significant funding in various projects such as the Dutch Rathenau Institute and the National Centre of Excellence for Technology Ethics. His academic journey began at the University of Groningen, where he earned his PhD in 1998. Following this, he joined the University of Twente, focusing on ethics and philosophy of technology, before taking on a special appointment at the University of Amsterdam. Swierstra's career has also seen him as head of the Department of Philosophy at Maastricht University from 2010 until 2020. He seeks to explore how ethical considerations can be integrated into technological developments to address global challenges, including environmental crises like global warming.
