Biography

T.L. Cowan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) and serves as the Associate Chair for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA). Since joining UTSC in 2017, T.L. has also held the position of Presidential Visiting Professor in Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies at Yale University and chaired the Experimental Pedagogies program at the New School's School of Media Studies. T.L.’s research is primarily focused on cultural intellectual economies, specifically exploring networks of trans-feminist queer (TFQ) minoritized digital media performance practices. One of T.L.'s key works includes the monograph titled 'Transmedial Drag: Cross-Platform Cabaret Methods', which is nearing completion. Additionally, T.L. is a co-author of the 'Feminist Data Manifest-No.' and has collaborated with Jasmine Rault on various projects, including holding SSHRC Insight Grants for research into networked intimate publics and building digital research ethics for minoritized materials. T.L. also co-directs online research platforms such as the Digital Research Ethics Collaboratory (DREC) and Cabaret Commons, and is a co-editor for a special section in Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience. As a co-director of the Critical Digital Methods Institute (CDMI), T.L. contributes to the academic community through initiatives supported by UTSC's Departmental Research Fund.
