Biography

Taco Terpstra holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (2011) and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics at Northwestern University, with a courtesy joint appointment in the History Department. His research primarily focuses on Roman socioeconomic history, comparative history, and Roman archaeology. Terpstra is the author of 'Trading Communities in the Roman World' (Leiden: Brill, 2013) and 'Trade in the Ancient Mediterranean: Private Order and Public Institutions' (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2019). He contributed to a combined research exhibition project at the Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University during the 2017-18 academic year, resulting in the edited volume 'Portrait of a Child: Historical Scientific Studies of Roman Egyptian Mummy' (Block Museum, 2019). His teaching covers Roman sociopolitical and economic history, methodologies of historical research, and archaeology in Roman Campania. Terpstra is a Faculty Fellow at the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities and teaches a variety of courses on ancient economies and archaeological studies.
