Biography

Tadashi Fukami is a Professor in the Department of Earth System Science at Stanford University. His research focuses on understanding how the history of species arrival shapes the development of ecological communities. He studies traditional ecological knowledge and practices, particularly adopting a two-eyed seeing approach, and is the Faculty Director of the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. Fukami earned his Bachelor's degree from Waseda University, his Master's from the University of Tokyo, and his PhD from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His early exposure to nature in Japan and influential biology teachers during high school solidified his passion for ecology. After working as a postdoctoral fellow in New Zealand, he joined Stanford's faculty in 2008. His research tools include experimental and comparative methods involving various organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and plants. Notable projects include the study of microbial colonization of floral nectar in ume orchards to understand its effects on pollination and ecosystem functioning. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to the ecological field, including the ASN Distinguished Naturalist Award in 2022 and the Presidential Award from the American Society of Naturalists in 2019.
