Biography

Tahseen Shams is an award-winning sociologist specializing in international migration, race/ethnicity, and religion. His research employs a range of qualitative methods, producing published works that examine transnational and global forms of inequality and their intersections with local boundary-work affecting immigrant groups, particularly South Asian Muslims in the West. His agenda investigates how migration and globalization shape the identities and behaviors of immigrants, and how geopolitical factors influence their everyday lives and relationships. His acclaimed book, 'Elsewhere: Making Immigrant Identities in a Globalized World,' published by Stanford University Press in August 2020, has received multiple prestigious accolades including the American Sociological Association’s 2021 Thomas Znaniecki Book Award and the 2021 Distinguished Book Award from the Sociology of Religion section. His work has garnered international recognition, leading to invitations for talks at over 30 universities across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.
