Biography

Takahiro Yamamoto is a historian specializing in modern East Asia Pacific and is currently a lecturer in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) cluster at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from the University of Tokyo, followed by a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. He completed his PhD in international history at the London School of Economics in 2016. Before joining SUTD, he held research and teaching positions at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, NYU Shanghai, and the University of Tokyo. His publications include the monograph 'Demarcating Japan: Islanders, Imperialism, Mobility, 1855-1884' published by the Harvard University Asia Center in 2023, and the edited volume 'Documenting Mobility in the Japanese Empire' from Palgrave Macmillan in 2022. His research interests are centered around the history of modern Japan from a global perspective, specifically focusing on border-crossing activities and human mobility control. He is currently working on a project regarding the history of ID photos in twentieth-century Japan, with research funded by the European Association of Japanese Studies, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Baden-Württemberg Foundation, and the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
