Takanori Furukawa is a fungal molecular biologist associated with the Manchester Fungal Infection Group (MFIG) at the University of Manchester. Over the past decade, he has focused on the biological mechanisms of fungal infections, particularly emphasizing the molecular basis of pathogenicity and antifungal resistance exhibited by the major human pathogen, Aspergillus fumigatus. Takanori completed his PhD in Bioengineering at Nagaoka University of Technology in Japan in 2009, where he researched glycoside hydrolase gene expression in the cellulolytic fungus Trichoderma reesei. In 2013, he moved to the UK to join the Centre for Synthetic Systems Biology at the University of Edinburgh as a research associate, where he developed new skills in synthetic biology. Since 2015, he has been a dedicated member of the MFIG. His main research achievements include characterizing a comprehensive collection of transcription factor knockout mutants of Aspergillus fumigatus, which facilitates the identification of transcription factors important for antifungal resistance. Takanori was awarded the University of Manchester EDI "Perera" Fellowship funded by the Wellcome Trust Institutional Strategic Support Fund. He is also a member of the British Society for Medical Mycology (BSMM), demonstrating his commitment to the field of fungal research.
Includes MSc in Advanced Electrical Power Systems and MSc in Communications and Signal Processing.
