Biography

Dr. Tala Al-Rousan, MD, MPH, is Assistant Professor and founding faculty member at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at the University of California, San Diego, and an affiliate faculty in the Division of Geriatrics. She possesses extensive expertise in health equity and global health research focusing on marginalized populations. Her work includes designing and conducting epidemiological research in limited-resource settings, utilizing mixed-methods and multidisciplinary study designs. She has researched the impact of brain health institutionalization on disease outcomes for various marginalized populations, including those in the criminal justice system and refugee groups. Currently, Dr. Al-Rousan leads a hypertension self-management intervention study for Middle Eastern and East African refugees in San Diego, and is involved in research addressing dementia care barriers for recently resettled Syrian and Iraqi refugees. Additionally, she contributes to several international studies assessing cognitive health in refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon, and hypertension management in Peru, Malawi, and Cameroon. Dr. Al-Rousan has received multiple awards for her work, including the NIH K23 award and several recognitions for innovative research in aging. She actively mentors students and fellows from underrepresented backgrounds, emphasizing support for refugees and first-generation students.
