Dr. Tamar Barlam

Biography

Tamar Barlam is a Professor in the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine at Boston University, specializing in Infectious Diseases. She earned her MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry and her BS from the City College of New York. With 30 years of experience, Dr. Barlam has been pivotal in directing antimicrobial stewardship programs, advocating for the appropriate use of antimicrobials in both human and veterinary medicine. Her research focuses on understanding the factors that influence antimicrobial prescribing and the implementation of stewardship interventions. Dr. Barlam has led public policy initiatives aimed at reducing inappropriate use of antimicrobials in food animals and has served on national task forces to improve antimicrobial use in companion animals. As an active member in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, she works to mentor underrepresented groups in the field of infectious diseases and consulting on bias training. Dr. Barlam has chaired the Antibiotic Stewardship Committee for the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and has developed strategic plans focused on DEIA in hospital epidemiology. Her significant contributions include mentorship and collaborations to address racial and ethnic disparities in antibiotic prescribing practices across various projects.
