Biography

Tamara Chaplin is a professor of modern European history and a Lynn M. Martin Professorial Scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She specializes in contemporary France with particular focuses on gender, sexuality, media history, and queer theory. Chaplin's recent book, "Becoming Lesbian: Queer History Modern France," published by the University of Chicago Press in 2024, provides an analysis of marginalized subcultures and their influence through modern media on public perceptions of sexual desire. Her previous monograph, "Turning Mind: French Philosophers Television," also published by the University of Chicago Press in 2007, explores the intersection of television, high culture, and French national identity. Chaplin's scholarship has appeared in various academic journals and edited volumes focusing on youth sexuality, Michel Foucault, and feminism. She has been a governing member of the Western Society for French History and a past board member of the American Historical Association's Committee on LGBT History. In addition to her teaching awards for excellence in undergraduate education, Chaplin is also noted for her involvement in the performing arts as a trained ballet dancer and actor. She earned her doctorate in modern European history from Rutgers University and her Bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in Montreal.
