Biography

Tamara Humphrey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Victoria. She is a critical criminologist and a community-engaged researcher whose work focuses on the systems that criminalize individuals, particularly those with early experiences of multiple adversities and victimization. Dr. Humphrey advocates for the rights of those currently and formerly incarcerated, aiming to address the barriers they face upon re-entry into society. Her research employs a diverse range of qualitative and quantitative methods to highlight the systemic causes of poor outcomes related to criminalization and incarceration in Canada. She is co-director of the Centre for Research Processes, Outcomes, and Impacts of Incarceration, which focuses on community-oriented critical research. Additionally, she serves on the Critical Perspectives National Steering Committee, which oversees an annual meeting dedicated to criminology and justice-related discussions in Canada. Her scholarly interests include community-engaged research, critical feminist criminology, the sociology of punishment, re-entry and reintegration, abolition, life-course criminology, and both qualitative and quantitative methods.
