Biography

Tammie Bishop is an Associate Professor in Cellular Integrative Physiology at the University of Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. She is also a Tutorial Fellow at Trinity College. Her research focuses on understanding how low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, influence cellular processes, particularly in relation to the progression of cancers. Tammie's work has illuminated the mechanisms by which hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), specifically HIF-2α, regulate cell proliferation and contribute to tumor growth in conditions such as carotid body paragangliomas and kidney clear cell carcinomas. She currently leads a research group dedicated to investigating rapid physiological responses to low oxygen levels, exemplified by the increased breathing response to hypoxia mediated by peripheral arterial chemoreceptors in the carotid body. Her contributions to the field have been recognized with the Wellcome Discovery Award. Recent notable publications include contributions to journals such as Physiology and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
