Dr. Tana Allen

Biography

Tana Allen is a professor in the Department of Classics at Memorial University of Newfoundland. With a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, her research focuses on the development of ancient Roman healing spas and their integration into concepts of health within imperial society. She examines the evidence of healing spas as represented in the archaeological record and epigraphic material, exploring the abundant references found in both technical and non-technical texts. Allen aims to decipher how Romans accessed healthcare options, emphasizing the individual experiences within a social context rather than merely the institutional developments. Currently, she is investigating how ancient spa bathing practices inform contemporary practices, undertaking exploratory work at spa resorts across Europe and North America. Over her career, she has contributed significantly to archaeological activities and has authored several chapters highlighting artifacts recovered from North African sites. Allen has delivered notable scholarly lectures on the historical contexts of health and travel recommendations in ancient Rome.
