Dr. Tana Allen

Biography

Tana Allen is the Vice-President (Research) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She has a robust academic background as a classical archaeologist and social historian, focusing her research on ancient architecture and medical practices of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Her significant research interests revolve around ancient Roman healing spas and their integration into health concepts within ancient societies, emphasizing the social context of individual experiences over institutional developments. Dr. Allen has served as the associate dean (research) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and she was instrumental in revitalizing the Department of Classics at Memorial University during her 13 years as department head. Her current research areas include the representation of classical architecture in the modern world, classical motifs in pop culture, and ancient healing practices. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College, a Master of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin, and a PhD from the University of Alberta. Additionally, Dr. Allen actively participates in the academic community by organizing numerous events, adjudicating academic prizes, and providing expert supervision for students from Canada and abroad.
