Biography

Tanu Mitra is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington Information School, where she leads the Social Computing Algorithmic Experiences (SCALE) lab. She holds an adjunct appointment at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering. Her current research focuses on Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and Responsible AI, employing computational techniques, AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and social science principles to investigate complex social processes related to human-human and human-computer interactions in large-scale online systems. She utilizes a range of interdisciplinary methods from human-computer interaction, data mining, AI, and machine learning to understand human behavior online and enhance human-human and human-machine communication. As of the academic year 2026-2027, Dr. Mitra is accepting new PhD students and has received numerous accolades for her work, including the NSF-CAREER Award and Google Academic Research Award.
