Biography

Dr. Tanya Applegate has over 20 years of experience as a laboratory research scientist in various environments, including regulatory, hospital, private industry, and academia. Her PhD focused on the development and implementation of novel molecular diagnostics, aiming to provide equitable access to healthcare and improve the linkage to care for marginalized individuals in remote and resource-limited settings. At the Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney, she serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Surveillance Evaluation Research Program and is also the Scientific Manager of RAPID (Research Asia Pacific Infectious Disease) Diagnostics Centre. Additionally, she is a Co-Director of the ARC Industry Transformation Research Hub aimed at combating antimicrobial resistance. Her broad research interests include diagnostics, infectious diseases, cohort clinical research, and implementation science, with specific expertise in point of care testing, blood-borne viruses, sexually transmitted infections, and antimicrobial resistance.
