Dr. Tanya Benitez

Biography

Tanya Benitez is an Assistant Professor in Behavioral Social Sciences at Brown University. She received her PhD in Health Education Promotion from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from Stony Brook University, New York. Benitez completed postdoctoral fellowships in Health Disparities Science at Arizona State University and Integrated Cardiovascular Epidemiology at the University of California, San Diego. She is a bilingual Latina whose research focuses on promoting physical activity among Latinos, with a specific emphasis on women at risk for lifestyle-related health conditions. Her work includes developing and testing culturally appropriate physical activity interventions for underserved populations, examining the social, cultural, and behavioral mechanisms that influence health disparities, and applying behavior change theories and technology to enhance physical activity promotion among Latinos.
