Biography

Tao Cheng, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering at University College London (UCL). He currently holds the position of Vice-Dean (International) in the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences. With a distinguished background as a Turing Fellow and Theme Lead at the Alan Turing Institute, Cheng is a noted member of the UK Department for Transport’s College of Experts. His research interests focus on the intersection of artificial intelligence and big data, network complexity, geographical information science (GISci), and smart cities. Cheng's pioneering work in spatiotemporal data uncertainties and integrated space-time modeling has significantly advanced the field of urban analytics, particularly through innovative applications in transport mobility and public health. In 2012, he founded the UCL SpaceTimeLab, a celebrated research center dedicated to big data analytics. With over 350 refereed publications and multiple accolades, including recognition on Stanford University’s Top 2% Scientists List, his impactful research has attracted over £27 million in funding from UK, EU, and China. Cheng maintains collaborations with key government and industry partners, contributing to improved public safety and urban initiatives.
