Biography

Tao Pan is a Professor at the University of Chicago, where his research focuses on functional genomics, tRNA biology, and epitranscriptomics. Pan's work on tRNA biology explores the dynamic properties of tRNA that facilitate translational regulation and gene expression control in response to environmental changes. He has developed high-throughput sequencing technologies to measure tRNA abundance and modifications. His microbiome research utilizes a unique tRNA-seq approach to characterize microbial DNA and RNA activity. Pan investigates how tRNA modifications influence gene expression and protein interactions, contributing to our understanding of microbiome-host interactions. Additionally, he examines over 100 types of post-transcriptional RNA modifications, their dynamic regulation, and their roles in cellular functions. He has received multiple awards for his research, including the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award.
