Tarek Bismar graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Damascus University in Syria in 1996. He continued his medical career in the USA, initially working as a Research Assistant at Michigan State University. In 2000, he completed a residency in Anatomical Pathology at Washington University in St. Louis, followed by a fellowship in surgical pathology at Wayne State University in 2002 and a GU pathology fellowship at Harvard Medical School in 2003. In 2004, he joined McGill University as an Assistant Professor and became the director of the Pathology Core Facility in 2005. In 2008, he moved to the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine as an Associate Professor, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2015. Bismar directs a research lab focusing on characterizing novel genetic signatures in GU cancers and has published over 115 peer-reviewed publications, primarily on prostate cancer biomarkers and genomic signatures. His research employs multiple platforms including gene expression and whole exome/genome sequencing and involves collaborations with national and international investigators.
