Dr. Tariq Akhtar

Biography

Tariq Akhtar is an Associate Professor in the College of Biological Science at the University of Guelph. His primary research focuses on the molecular biochemical basis of natural products and specialized metabolites that help plants adapt to their dynamic environments. He employs a diverse set of approaches in molecular biology, genomic, and classical biochemical resources to investigate these compounds. His collaborative work spans across organic chemistry, food science, neurobiology, and ecology. The overall goal of his research is to elucidate the processes operating at the interface of primary and secondary metabolism in plants, with an emphasis on compounds that have medicinal, industrial, and pharmacological relevance.
