Professor Dr. Tatiana Mishanina

Biography

Tatiana Mishanina is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California San Diego. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of gene expression, particularly within the contexts of human mitochondria and bacteria. The lab employs biochemical structural biology techniques to study RNA polymerase, the central enzyme in gene expression, and its roles in transcriptional pausing and the coupling of RNA synthesis with DNA replication and RNA processing. The research aims to inform the development of antimicrobial treatments and strategies to manipulate gene expression for optimizing cellular processes. Her education includes a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Iowa and a B.S. in Chemistry from Wichita State University. She has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Michigan, further enhancing her expertise in biochemistry and structural biology.
