Tatiana Segura is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, also holding appointments in Neurology and Dermatology. She received her B.S. degree in Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1999 and completed her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Northwestern University in 2004. Prof. Segura initiated her career focusing on biomaterials research, particularly during her doctoral studies under Prof. Lonnie Shea, where she designed hydrogels for local, non-viral gene delivery. Her postdoctoral training with Jeffrey Hubbell furthered her expertise in self-assembled polysulfide hydrogels for gene delivery applications. Prior to joining Duke, she was a faculty member at UCLA, where she served as Vice Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. At Duke, she has been actively involved in departmental and university service and has chaired several committees. Prof. Segura’s research focuses on biomaterials that enhance soft tissue interactions to promote healing and regeneration, particularly in contexts such as stroke recovery and regenerative medicine. She leads a lab that includes graduate and postdoctoral researchers, focusing on creating innovative biomaterial interventions for various applications. Prof. Segura has been recognized with multiple awards, including being named a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors and receiving prestigious grants and honors throughout her career, including the National Science Foundation's CAREER Award and recognition from the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. She has over 100 peer-reviewed publications, significantly contributing to the field of biomaterials engineering and regenerative medicine.
