Dr. Tavares Strachan

Biography

Tavares Strachan, born in 1979 in Nassau, Bahamas, is a visiting critic at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. He studied painting at the College of the Bahamas and received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. He further honed his skills by studying glass and completing an MFA in sculpture at Yale University. Strachan's work explores themes of invisibility and displacement, both physical and metaphorical, challenging the acceptance of canonized histories and geographies. Notable projects include 'Distance Want' (2006), which featured a 4.5-ton block of ice shipped from Alaska to the Bahamas for a well-received exhibit. His work also focuses on orthostatic tolerance, analyzing how the human body copes with extreme environmental pressures, whether from outer space or the ocean depths. Strachan's notable solo exhibitions were showcased at institutions like the MIT List Visual Arts Center and the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania.
