Biography

Dr. Tayla von Ash is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University, where she also contributes to the Center for Health Promotion and Health Equity. Initially joining Brown as a Presidential Diversity Postdoctoral Fellow in 2018, she completed her ScD in Social Behavioral Sciences with a focus on Public Health Nutrition from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. Dr. von Ash's research focuses on social epidemiology, particularly the prevention of childhood obesity and the socioeconomic disparities that impact related risk factors. Her current work explores the influence of social, cultural, and environmental factors on children's energy balance, highlighting the critical role of parenting practices. Additionally, she investigates sleep as a risk factor for obesity, revealing significant differences in sleep duration among children of various races and ethnicities that are not completely explained by socioeconomic status. Dr. von Ash is also engaged in the development and evaluation of interventions aimed at high-risk populations in the United States.
