Biography

Taylor Perron joined the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) at MIT in 2009 as the Cecil Ida Green Professor. He earned his AB in Earth and Planetary Sciences with a focus on Archaeology from Harvard University in 1999, later completing his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley in 2006. Perron's postdoctoral research at Harvard in 2007 provided new evidence for the existence of ancient oceans on Mars. He has received significant recognition for his contributions to understanding landscape evolution in the context of environmental changes, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 2021. He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and a past recipient of the James B. Macelwane Medal. Perron serves on the Editorial Committee for the Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences and has held several leadership roles within EAPS, including chair of the Program in Geology, Geochemistry, and Geobiology, and Associate Department Head for Education. His current research interests are wide-ranging, encompassing landscape evolution, planetary surfaces, and the interaction of climate with landforms and life.
